i would like to buy some tax liens not as an investment on the manifest lien, rather to take ownership of the home do some renovations and sell it, or keep it as a rental unit? does anybody have knowledge of what the procedure is? please be as specific as possible.

I am looking to start buying licit estate tax liens as an investment but I am confused what capital gains I would need to pay. From what I read there is terse and long term capital gains. Long term is for investments over 1 year. So would this be a for fear of the fact by case deal? If someone pays their lien off in 5 months i do short term for that particular investment, and if someone else takes 2 years than that one would be lengthy term? If that is the case it seems it's a good idea to buy

I've heard yes and I've heard no. Does anyone conscious for sure? I know that NC has tax deed sales, possibly with redemption periods.
